BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Eli Lilly and Co. Chairman and CEO Sidney Taurel will give the keynote address at the dedication of Simon Hall, Indiana University Bloomington's newest science building.

The dedication is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, and will also include presentations by IU President Michael McRobbie, IU Bloomington Provost Karen Hanson and College of Arts and Sciences Dean Bennett Bertenthal. A reception will follow the ceremony, at which point the building will be open for public tours. The dedication is part of a week of special events at IU, including McRobbie's inauguration as president.

Simon Hall is named for members of the Simon family, who contributed $9 million toward the completion of the structure, also known as Multidisciplinary Science Building Phase I. It is the first of three planned research structures. There will be a groundbreaking ceremony for MSB Phase II at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26.

Taurel became chief executive officer in July 1998 and chairman of the board of directors on Jan. 1, 1999. Taurel joined the Lilly subsidiary Eli Lilly International Corp. in 1971 as a marketing associate. He became general manager of the company's affiliate in Brazil in 1981 and was appointed to the London-based position of vice president of Lilly European operations in 1983. He was named executive vice president of Eli Lilly and Co. and president of its pharmaceutical division in 1993. Three years later, he was promoted to president and chief operating officer.
