BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Michael McRobbie has been named an honorary member of the university's Alliance of Distinguished and Titled Professors, it was announced today (Sept. 24).

McRobbie is only the third IU president to receive the award, which recognizes members of the university community who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to academic excellence at IU. He is the first president to be made an honorary member while still in office.

"I am deeply honored and humbled to join the ranks of such accomplished members of IU's scholarly community, and I greatly look forward to working with them to continue to advance IU's excellence in research, teaching and service," said McRobbie, who became IU president on July 1.

The Alliance is an organization of active and emeritus professors holding distinguished rank, a titled professorship or an endowed chair. Typically, one honorary membership is awarded every other year, most often to distinguished university leaders upon their retirement. Only one such award may be given per year.

"This is the first time the Alliance has awarded honorary membership to a sitting president," said Distinguished Professor and Alliance Co-Chair Fred Cate. "The Steering Committee's decision to do so reflects our respect for President McRobbie's distinguished academic record, our appreciation of his bold vision and demonstrated success in his prior leadership positions here, and our confidence that as president he will continue to advance, energetically, the academic mission of the university."

Prior recipients of honorary membership include past IU presidents Herman B Wells and John Ryan; Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Chancellor Emeritus Jerry Bepko; IU Jacobs School of Music Dean Emeritus Charles Webb; former College of Arts and Sciences Dean Morton Lowengrub; and emeritus professor Henry H.H. Remak.

McRobbie joined IU in 1997 as vice president of information technology. After serving in several administrative roles at IU, including, most recently, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at IU Bloomington, he was named the university's 18th president in March by IU trustees. He will be formally inaugurated as president on Oct. 18 in a ceremony at the IU Auditorium.
