BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Six years after the 9/11 attacks, David Cole argues that the U.S. has become less secure against terrorist attacks -- despite the sacrifice of civil liberties in the war on terror.

Cole, the legal affairs correspondent for The Nation and a professor of law at Georgetown University, will speak Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Indiana University School of Law—Bloomington. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Moot Court Room.

Cole will speak on "Less Safe, Less Free: Why America Is Losing the War on Terror," also the title of a new book that he co-wrote with University of Pittsburgh Law Professor Jules Lobel. The IU student chapter of the American Constitution Society will host the lecture.

The book is a critique of the Bush administration's "preventive paradigm" in fighting terrorism. Cole and Lobel contend that the administration has failed to bring terrorists to justice while prompting the formation of new terrorist groups with the war in Iraq. They say the administration has undermined basic American ideals with CIA "black sites" and warrantless wiretapping of citizens.

Cole is a volunteer staff attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights, a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books, and a commentator on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." He is the author of two award-winning books, Enemy Aliens and No Equal Justice: Race and Class in the American Criminal Justice System.

A book signing will follow his lecture. More information on his most recent book can be found at www.lesssafelessfree.net.

Reporters who wish to interview Cole prior to his IU lecture should contact Debbie O'Leary at the IU School of Law at 812-855-2426 or devo99@indiana.edu.
