BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Jamie L. Stalker, M.D., medical director of Argonne National Laboratory, is the 26th Joan Wood Lecture Series honoree. Stalker will present "Flexibility and the Fickle Finger of Fate: A Peculiar Path from Musician to Medical Director," on Oct. 3, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., in Myers Hall 130 on the Indiana University Bloomington campus.

Stalker has worked as an internist and clinical instructor for the past 16 years and is a member of the American Biological Safety Association, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, National Supplemental Screening Advisory Committee, and the Chicago Medical Directors' Group. She has been trained in and practiced emergency response for chemical and radiation exposure, employee health, occupational clearance, personal emergency care, safety inspections and wellness programming. In 2004, Stalker became medical director at Argonne National Laboratory, where she worked previously as an internist. Stalker received her B.S. in biology from IU in 1983 and her M.D. from Rush Medical College in 1988.

The Joan Wood Lecture Series provides a forum for undergraduates to interact with women in science-related careers. Designed to encourage undergraduate women to pursue advanced degrees in science, the series showcases the many career opportunities available to science majors. Before her death in 1990, Wood was a strong advocate of women in the sciences and remained active in educational programs within the IU Department of Biology. Memorial contributions made in her honor helped establish this lecture series.

Previous Joan Wood lecturers include National Center for Science Education Director Eugenie Scott, National Institutes of Health Biochemical Genetics Chief Susan Gottesman, and MacArthur Fellow Nicole King.
