INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Board of Trustees of Indiana University voted Friday (Dec. 6) to name William M. Plater as acting chancellor of the IUPUI campus, beginning Jan. 1. The action came during the trustees' monthly business meeting, held at IUPUI.

Current IUPUI Chancellor Gerald Bepko will become Indiana University's interim president on Jan. 1, succeeding Myles Brand.

Plater has worked at IUPUI, Indiana University's second-largest campus, since 1983. He became dean of the faculties in 1987 and assumed the additional role of executive vice chancellor in 1988. He has held both positions ever since.

Plater received his doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

"Bill Plater has been a vital part of the leadership team at IUPUI, and he has an in-depth understanding of the issues facing the campus. I am certain he will do an excellent job as acting chancellor," Bepko said.

In March, Bepko announced he would be stepping down as chancellor at the end of the 2002-03 academic year to return to teaching and research. The search to select Bepko's permanent successor is now in its final stages. The search committee expects to provide the names of finalists to Brand by Dec. 15.
