IU honors 154 liberal arts and science majors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A group of 154 highly accomplished students in the College of Arts and Sciences will be inducted into Indiana University's Gamma Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at a ceremony and banquet on Dec. 6. Election to Phi Beta Kappa is the highest honor that can be conferred on an undergraduate in the liberal arts and sciences. About one college senior in a hundred nationwide is invited to join this prestigious group.

Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. The organization elects members from among the current junior and senior class, based on demonstrated academic excellence in courses across the liberal arts and sciences curriculum. Gamma of Indiana has a nearly 100-year history at IU and has its home in the College of Arts and Sciences, which subsidizes the banquet and pays membership fees for newly elected students.

To be eligible for election, students must have pursued a broad program of study in the liberal arts and sciences, and must have exemplary academic and personal records. The newly elected Phi Beta Kappa members include 124 members of the class of 2008 and another 30 new members from the class of 2007. At this fall's banquet, past Gamma chapter president and chair of the Department of Religious Studies, David Brakke, will deliver an address entitled, "From the Gospel of Mary to the DaVinci Code: The Career of Jesus' Favorite Apostle."

The banquet will be held on 6 p.m. on Dec. 6 in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union. More than 250 friends, family and faculty members are expected. Tickets will be available at the door for $20.00.
