Indiana University School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) Dean Blaise Cronin has announced he will step down from his administrative position June 30, 2003. An interim dean will be appointed by Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Stephens Brehm.

SLIS Dean since 1991, Cronin has helped broaden the school's degree programs and has overseen the establishment of research centers in social informatics, information retrieval and information visualization. During his 12-year term, SLIS has consistently ranked among the nation's top library and information science programs.

Cronin plans to take a year's sabbatical leave but will remain on the faculty to pursue research projects in his area of expertise -- scholarly communication, citation analysis, scientific collaboration and cybermetrics. He will continue to publish on topics such as information warfare, strategic intelligence, knowledge management and information marketing.

In addition to authoring or editing more than 300 research articles, monographs, technical reports, conference papers and other publications, Cronin has served as an information consultant to the World Bank, the U.S. Department of Justice, UNESCO, the Brazilian Ministry of Science & Technology, the European Commission, the British Council, the British Library, Her Majesty's Treasury, Hewlett-Packard, Inc. and the Chemical Abstracts Service. As a testament to his excellence as a teacher at IU, Cronin is also the Rudy Professor of Information Science at the Bloomington campus.
