IU’s David Constantine receives awards at International Timpani Competition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- IU Jacobs School of Music student David Constantine was recently awarded second place at the Rendez-vous Internationaux de la Timbale (2nd International Timpani Competition of Lyon) in Lyon, France.

Constantine also received the "audience's choice" prize and the prize for the best interpretation of an imposed work, entitled Gesanglos II by Gilles Schuehmacher.

Constantine is currently pursuing his Doctor of Music degree in percussion performance under the guidance of Professors John Tafoya, Kevin Bobo and Steve Houghton at the IU Jacobs School of Music. Constantine holds a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance, with honors, from the University of Oregon, under the guidance of Professor Charles Dowd.

Constantine also currently serves as principal timpanist for the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra. He performs regularly with the Owensboro Philharmonic, Camerata Orchestra, and is an active recitalist and clinician.

Constantine has performed throughout Western Europe, and the United States as a soloist, and under the batons of Marin Alsop, Sylvain Frémaux, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, David Bowden, Giancarlo Guerrero, James Paul, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin and Gerhardt Zimmerman. He co-founded the APEX Percussion Duo, which has been performing in the Midwest states since its inception in 2006.

As an educator, Constantine is an associate instructor of percussion at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and caption head of marching percussion at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. He regularly teaches percussion camps and master classes at high schools in Oregon and Indiana. Constantine is also an invited clinician at public schools and universities.
