Indiana University has been selected to host a National Youth Sports Program this summer that will bring an estimated 200 at-risk students to the Bloomington campus for six weeks.

The School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) will host the June 23-Aug. 1 event for boys and girls from throughout Monroe County and the surrounding area who are between ages 10 and 16. Those attending will participate in educational experiences and explore selected physical activities such as swimming, judo, track and field, and tennis. The Web site for NYSP is https://www.nyscorp.org/nysp_overview.htm.

Keith Chapin, a clinical associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at HPER, is the project administrator for the program. "We plan to send announcements out this month to generate awareness and interest in this program among the youth in this area," he said, "and we will be working with the local schools and community action agencies to identify participants."

Goals of the program include expanding opportunities for disadvantaged youth to benefit from sports instruction, improving physical fitness, engaging in sports competition, gaining awareness of opportunities for higher education, and improving health practices and citizenship among the participants.

NYSP was founded in 1969 through efforts of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sport.
