IU Brass Choir to perform in Greensburg April 6 as part of Moveable Feast

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music continues IU's Moveable Feast of the Arts Series with a performance by the Indiana University Brass Choir on April 6 in Greensburg, Ind. The concert begins at 2:30p.m. in the Greensburg Junior High School Auditorium.

The Indiana University Brass Choir has long been one of the world's premier student brass ensembles. Listeners and reviewers have consistently praised its sound quality, musicality and precision of execution in repertoire spanning more than five centuries. Under the direction of Professor Edmund Cord since 1994, the musicians of the IU Brass Choir have delighted audiences with pieces from the time of Gabrieli to works by contemporary composers.

Student musicians audition at the beginning of each academic year to be in this elite group, which consists of six trumpets, six horns, four trombones, two baritones and two tubas, plus percussion as needed.

The program will include Symphony for Brass by Alfred Reed, Russian Funeral by Benjamin Britten, Antiphonale by David Uber and a new arrangement of Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust by Dominic Spera, Jacobs School professor emeritus.

Cord has been on the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since 1989. A 1972 graduate of Indiana University, he has been principal trumpet of the Israel Philharmonic, the Utah Symphony and the Santa Fe Opera, and guest principal trumpet of the Symphony Orchestras of Houston, Indianapolis, San Diego and St. Louis.

He performs frequently with the Indianapolis Symphony, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, The Carmel Brass Choir and in various orchestral, jazz and commercial ensembles. From 1994 to 2000, he was the trumpet instructor and brass coach of the Asian Youth Orchestra. Cord has given brass clinics and trumpet master classes in England, Israel and Australia, and throughout Asia and North America.

This is the third year of the Moveable Feast of the Arts initiative, which is designed to showcase the university's cultural resources to Hoosier communities and IU campuses across the state. The Moveable Feast of the Arts is an initiative of the IU President's Office, managed by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and funded by the Lilly Endowment.

Sponsored by the Arts & Cultural Council of Decatur County, this concert is part of the "Arts for All 2007-2008" program series with support from the Decatur County Community Foundation, Vectren, Duke Energy, Decatur County REMC, the Columbus Area Arts Council, the Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
