BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington admissions officials are reminding high school students who wish to be considered for 2008 fall admission that applications must be completed and in the mail by the April 1 deadline.

In the past, the IU Bloomington campus generally has accepted applications beyond the April 1 deadline, according to Roger Thompson, vice provost for enrollment management at IU. However, at this point in the admissions cycle, he said, the admissions office has received 31,000 applications to attend IU Bloomington next fall, and the wait list is twice as long as usual.

"We are thrilled with the degree of respect and enthusiasm that high school students and their families around the state have for IU," said Thompson. "For the first time in the history of the school, we simply are not going to be able to accept applications beyond April 1."

Thompson, who noted that applications to attend IU Bloomington have increased by 10,000 over the past four years, urged students who hope to go to IU in the future to have applications in before the February 1 priority date next year.

"I would say to students, 'don't wait around if you want to go to IU.' I believe that we are seeing a trend that is not going to level off soon," Thompson said. "I think it's likely that while this is the first year we will cut off applications on April 1, it probably will not be the last."
