IU Kokomo interim chancellor named today
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 17, 2008
KOKOMO, Ind. -- Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie today (June 17) announced the appointment of an interim successor for Indiana University Kokomo Chancellor Ruth Person, who is leaving this summer. McRobbie said that -- pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees during its June 20 meeting -- Stuart Green, vice chancellor for the IU Kokomo Office of Academic Affairs, will take over leadership of IU Kokomo as interim chancellor for two years beginning Aug. 18.
"Indiana University deeply appreciates Chancellor Ruth Person's dedicated leadership of IU Kokomo," McRobbie said. "During her tenure as chancellor, Ruth has led the campus through a strong period of growth. The challenge of Indiana University, now, is to build on that success. As vice chancellor for academic affairs, Stuart Green has played a central role in increasing educational opportunities at IU Kokomo by helping to establish new degree and other programs. His great experience in a number of leadership positions at IU Kokomo will prove an invaluable resource during this time of transition for the campus."
Green first arrived at IU Kokomo in 1972 when he began his academic career as assistant professor of fine arts. He became chairperson of the Department of Humanities in 1981 and assumed the role of dean of Arts and Sciences in 1982, serving in that capacity until his appointment as vice chancellor effective Feb. 1, 1998. Green graduated with a baccalaureate degree from the Art Institute of Chicago and earned a master's degree in fine arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1969.
His academic interests include the arts, including both visual and performing arts, and he has worked to include arts programming in the curriculum activities at IU Kokomo. A few years ago, he traveled with a group of faculty to Ireland to make a presentation on a unique freshman course he helped create that combines arts experiences for freshmen in visual arts, theater, storytelling, music and dance.
Green has been instrumental in assisting the campus to develop and institutionalize unique and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, supporting the creation of an accelerated evening college for working adults that uses face-to-face and online education in a hybrid format and fostering the development of year-long, interdisciplinary freshmen learning communities.
He has also served on an acting basis as director of the campus library, acting dean for SPEA programs, chair of the School of Education, and is serving as dean of School of Nursing this academic year.
