Sept. 9, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Widely respected bassist Jeremy Allen has been appointed assistant professor at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Department of Jazz Studies beginning Fall 2008. He has served as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Jazz Studies at the Jacobs School since 2006.
"Jeremy is one of the brightest and most well-respected young players in the field right now. We have already seen some students enroll because he is here," said David N. Baker, chair of the Jacobs Department of Jazz Studies. "He is a brilliant academician, as well as a musician, and he will be very valuable to us. We are all very excited to welcome him to the Jacobs jazz faculty."
Allen has performed in the United States and abroad with such jazz luminaries as Benny Golson, Dave Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Bob Brookmeyer, Jerry Bergonzi, Billy Hart, George Garzone and Lewis Nash. He performs locally in Indiana with internationally renowned musicians Steve Houghton, Pat Harbison, Luke Gillespie, Tom Walsh, Steve Allee, Jamey Aebersold and David Baker.
Allen has been invited to perform at the Terni (Italy) Jazz Festival, the Bonn Beethovenfest, the International Association of Jazz Educators Conferences in New York City and in Toronto, the Iowa City Jazz Festival and at the United Nations headquarters in New York. He has presented master classes at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Idaho State University, the University of Rhode Island and at high schools throughout Massachusetts, Virginia and Indiana.
As a recording artist, Allen can be heard on releases by Bob Brookmeyer and Kenny Wheeler, the Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra, the Joel Press Quartet, the Cary Brown Trio, Sara Caswell, the Kyle Quass Quartet, the quartet Chelsea Square and the (x)tet. He has recorded for the labels Artists House Music and Cadence Records and recently founded his own label, Watercourse Records, for the release of his own music and that of the ensembles with which he is involved.
Allen received his bachelor's degree in music in 1997 from the Jacobs School, where he studied as a Herman B Wells Scholar, and his master's degree in jazz performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in 2001. He has received two Certificates of Appreciation from the International Association of Jazz Educators. His students have been invited to perform at the Henry Mancini Institute, at the Ravinia Festival, in the Disney All-American College Band and at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
"There is no finer group of jazz educators teaching at any university or conservatory anywhere in the world than at the Jacobs School of Music, and I am honored to be included among their number," said Allen. "This is a time of tremendous growth in the Department of Jazz Studies, and I am very excited to be a part of the process."
