FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nov. 5, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Kathleen Sideli, associate vice president for overseas study at Indiana University, received IES Abroad's Lifetime Achievement Award -- the organization's highest honor and the organization's recent annual conference.
Sideli has been active in study abroad at IU for a quarter century and is recognized nationally and internationally for her advocacy for study abroad safety and security and for her efforts to systematize the collection of data on U.S. study abroad programs.
IES Abroad President, Mary Dwyer, described Sideli as "brilliant, strategic and incredibly energetic. She is all about one thing . . . quality . . . quality in academic programming, administrative activities, supporting students, scholarship and standards."
Sideli has written extensively about the field, most recently contributing to a groundbreaking history of study abroad in the United States. She has served in policymaking roles for several national organizations involved in global education initiatives.
A global, nonprofit educational organization, IES Abroad has programs in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and South America. The Office of Overseas Study coordinates study abroad for the IU system, awarding scholarships, assuring that IU programs provide adequate protections for the safety of IU students abroad and preparing students to get the most of their study abroad experience. Currently, 20 percent of IU undergraduates travel overseas at least once during their academic program.
In response to this honor, Sideli said, "It fills me with great pride that an organization of this quality would choose to honor me with an award. What we do matters a great deal in a world that needs the intercultural and international experiences that together we make available to the students who will one day be the future leaders in a world that needs leadership now more than ever."
