A formal ceremony was held Friday (May 9) to rename the Institute of Social Research at the Indiana University Bloomington Sociology Department after retired Distinguished Professor Karl Schuessler.

The new name for the institute is the Karl F. Schuessler Institute for Social Research to recognize the contributions of the long-time IU faculty member. Schuessler joined the IU sociology faculty in 1947 and later became chair of the department for eight years. He retired in 1985 with the title of Distinguished Professor but continued to publish for several years.

Schuessler was instrumental in creation of the institute in 1963 to promote and facilitate research in sociology. The facility at 1022 E. Third St. operates as part of the Sociology Department but is interdisciplinary in scope and serves other units of the campus and university.

The Web site for the institute is https://www.indiana.edu/~isr.
