BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Evan and Susan Bayh Foundation has made a gift of $50,000 to Indiana University as part of its Matching the Promise fundraising campaign for the Bloomington campus. The gift establishes the Bayh Family Scholarship endowment which will provide financial aid for students who are admitted to IU Bloomington as 21st Century Scholars through the program established by the state of Indiana. The campus will match the income earned on the gift, doubling the funds available to students.

"Indiana University thanks the Evan and Susan Bayh Foundation for this generous gift," said IU President Michael A. McRobbie. "It not only complements a program established while Senator Bayh was governor of the state, but also speaks to the Bayhs' personal commitment to educational opportunity for all the sons and daughters of Indiana."

The 21st Century Scholars program was created by the Indiana General Assembly in 1990 under the leadership of then-Gov. Evan Bayh. The purpose of the program was to ensure that all Indiana families, especially those with low and moderate household incomes, could afford a college education for their children. The program provides funding for tuition and mandatory fees.

About 1,240 students attend the IU Bloomington campus as 21st Century Scholars.
