Indiana University Bloomington achieves STARS Silver sustainability rating
Indiana University Bloomington became the seventh school in North America to report using a comprehensive new campus sustainability benchmark, receiving a "silver" rating. The rating system, called the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), is administered by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Six IU Bloomington groups receive Arthur R. Metz Philanthropic Funds for student projects
The Indiana University Student Foundation (IUSF) recently awarded $25,000 in grant funds from the Arthur R. Metz Philanthropic Opportunity Fund to six IU Bloomington campus student groups. The program awards $50,000 in two installments, in fall and spring. Student groups that support a philanthropic cause can receive up to $5,000 with a qualifying grant proposal. IU expert: Illinois income-tax increase is "honest, transparent" but politically risky
The Illinois legislature voted in a lame-duck session this week to increase the state's personal income tax from 3 percent to 5 percent in order to help close a budget deficit projected to hit $15 billion. John Mikesell, Chancellor's Professor and a public finance expert at the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs, says the move, though politically controversial, makes sense in light of Illinois' budget problems. Livescience.com, Jan. 12 -- Researchers have been "following the relationship between markers of sedentary behavior, such as TV watching and screen time, but now we have started to objectively quantify physical inactivity as well as activity," said Jeanne D. Johnston, an assistant professor of kinesiology at Indiana University who was not involved with the new study. Full story.

Bloomington Lands International Conference
InsideINdianaBusiness.com Report, Jan. 14 -- Bloomington has been chosen as the site of the Future Problem Solving Program International Conference in June 2012 and 2013. Approximately 2,000 people are expected to attend each of the five-day conference, which will be held on the Indiana University campus. Full story.

Cinema marks new point for IU history
Indiana Daily Student, Jan. 14 -- The buzz and anticipation for the grand opening of the IU Cinema has been culminating for the past 15 months since the start of the theater's restoration. The cinema, which is THX certified, has a 16 mm and a 35 mm projector. The cinema is also 3-D and reel-to-reel capable, allowing the theater to eventually show any of the 82,000 movie reels the University has in its archives, IU Cinema Director Jon Vickers said.
