IU in the news
Prof: Tweets predict the stock market
WISHTV8.com, July 14 -- All those tweets and posts you put on social media could eventually make stock investors a lot of money. All thanks to an Indiana University associate professor who has come up with a way to predict the future based on your social media thoughts. We told you back in October that Johan Bollen had figured out that by watching what you post on social media, he could predict which way the stock market would move. Not just today, but a week from today. Now, the discovery has gone from the lab to the real world. Full story.

IU's goal is to establish a new model for personal computing in higher education that increases accessibility and security for users, reduces desktop-support costs, and increases operational efficiency by providing desktop virtualization. Perspective in Math and Art
Insidehighered.com, July 18 -- I happened to be spending part of my first research leave at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis during the semester that Indiana University was applying for a large Mathematics Throughout the Curriculum grant from the National Science Foundation. The MATC project aimed to team up a mathematician with an "other" -- a historian, a biologist, an economist -- to do math in the context of that other discipline. Marc Frantz was in the math department at IUPUI then (in fact, he was the executive director of the MATC project), but he had his first graduate degree from the university's Herron School of Fine Art. We teamed up; I added "instant dissemination" by taking the project out of Indiana and back to Franklin & Marshall College, my home institution. Full story.
New Honda jobs have ripple effect
The Indianapolis Star, July 18 -- Estimates by the Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University show 1,000 new Honda jobs will trigger 2,632 additional jobs across the state, including 695 new jobs in auto-parts plants, 612 in retail and 151 in warehouses and trucking. "Certainly it will put some wind in the sails of the state's economy," economist Jerry Conover of the business research center said recently. Full story.
