Masterpieces and high tech: Modern dance at Indiana University -- Modern dance performers at Indiana University will perform seminal works of modern dance icons as well as original faculty creations featuring cutting edge technology during the IU Contemporary Dance Program's annual guest artist and faculty concert on Jan. 11-12 on the Bloomington campus. IU's Kelley School of Business signs agreement with South Korea's Sungkyunkwan University -- Indiana University's Kelley School of Business announced Jan. 8 that it has signed an agreement with Sungkyunkwan University of Seoul, South Korea, that will bring together students, faculty and programs of the two globally recognized institutions. Two IU professors nominated to U.S. National Council on Humanities -- President George W. Bush has nominated two Indiana University professors to the National Council on the Humanities for a six-year period beginning Jan. 27. Both teach in the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington. IU professors Jamsheed Kairshasp Choksy and David Michael Hertz are two of three Hoosiers nominated this year to the council, which is part of the National Endowment for the Humanities. IU Bloomington posts task force report on campus sustainability -- A Campus Sustainability Report for Indiana University Bloomington charts a course for IU Bloomington to become a leader in the study and practice of environmental sustainability. Produced under the direction of the IU Task Force on Campus Sustainability, the final report has been posted on the campus sustainability Web site, https://www.indiana.edu/~sustain. Three Jacobs School students win District Met Auditions -- Three Indiana University Jacobs School of Music students were named winners in the Indiana District competition of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions held on Jan. 5 at Indiana University's Musical Arts Center. Former HHS Secretary Thompson to visit IU's Kelley School on Tuesday -- Tommy G. Thompson, former Health and Human Services secretary and four-term governor of Wisconsin, will visit IU's Kelley School of Business on Jan. 8. 'Dim light ruins eyesight' and other medical myths; New research sheds some light on common beliefs and practices
TODAY Show, Jan. 2 -- Turkey makes you drowsy. Dim light ruins your eyes. Drink at last eight glasses of water a day. These are some of the medical myths that even doctors believe, reports the British Medical Journal. Researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine made a list of common medical beliefs espoused by physicians and the general public. The result is a seven-item list of medical and health myths that are widely repeated by doctors and in the media, all of which either aren't true or lack scientific evidence to support them. Study: Drug slows breast cancer; In IU-led trial, Avastin doubled the time disease was held in check
Indianapolis Star, Dec. 27 -- A drug that cuts off the blood supply to tumors has been found to dramatically slow the progression of advanced breast cancer, according to a study led by an Indiana University School of Medicine researcher. When used in conjunction with chemotherapy, the drug Avastin nearly doubled the amount of time that women with metastatic disease went without seeing their cancer grow, the trial of 722 women found. Kiplinger, Jan. 8 -- Several schools moved up dramatically in our rankings from last year. For instance, Indiana University-Bloomington jumped 21 slots, to number 34, thanks in part to improved test scores for incoming freshmen, more-generous financial aid and a lower average debt at graduation.
