BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson announced today (June 4) that Harold "Pete" Goldsmith, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs at Kent State University, has been named dean of students, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees.

"Pete is a highly accomplished student affairs professional who will bring a great depth of experience to the position," said Hanson. "He has a proven record as an administrator who is profoundly responsive to student needs, and he is clearly driven by a desire to help students succeed. I am delighted to welcome him back to Bloomington."

"I am very pleased and honored to return to my alma mater as the dean of students," said Goldsmith. "Indiana has been a very important part of my life. I look forward to returning to provide leadership for student affairs at the university. "

Goldsmith earned undergraduate and doctoral degrees from Indiana University Bloomington. His undergraduate major was government with minors in psychology and sociology. After graduating from the American University with Master of Education degree in student personnel, he returned to IU to pursue an Doctor of Education degree in higher education administration.

Goldsmith has overseen student affairs and enrollment management at Kent State University since 2003. He previously served as vice president for student affairs at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

He has also served as an administrator in student affairs at Michigan State and Old Dominion universities.

He has served as a consultant to the National Association of College and University Business Officers on strategic planning and has held leadership positions in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the American College Personnel Association.

He has published articles in student affairs journals and national newspapers on the impact of technology on student affairs and a number of other topics. He has given presentations around the nation on town-gown relations, curbing alcohol abuse on college campuses, and ethics in student affairs.

Goldsmith will replace Dick McKaig, who is retiring after a 38-year career at Indiana University. "Dick has been a wonderful advocate for Bloomington students for nearly four decades," said Hanson. "The entire campus is immensely grateful to him for his outstanding service, his wisdom and his dedication."

Goldsmith was one of four finalists for the position selected by a search committee chaired by Hutton Honors College Dean Matt Auer. The committee included students Andrew Dahlen, Luke Fields, A.D. King, Neil Shah, Sarah Taylor and Jill Waity; faculty members Purnima Bose, Barry Bull, Andrea Ciccarelli, Noy Kay, David Lohrmann and Faiz Rahman; and staff members Margaret Baechtold, Melanie Castillo-Cullather, Jackie Harding and Perry Metz.

"The committee members performed an invaluable service for the campus and I thank them for their exceptional work," Hanson said.

The Division of Student Affairs supports the academic mission of the university through student advocacy, services and programs that promote the general welfare of students and foster a campus climate conducive to learning and responsible citizenship.
