Indiana University to honor Norbu during Dalai Lama's visit

Indiana University will present Professor Thubten Norbu with its Distinguished International Service Award during dedication ceremonies for the Tibetan Cultural Center's Chamtse Ling Temple on Sept. 7.

Norbu, a retired IU Bloomington professor who founded the Tibetan Cultural Center in 1979, is the older brother of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama will make his fourth trip to Bloomington on that day to lead the dedication. The university's presentation will occur during the afternoon portion of the event. Patrick O'Meara, dean of IU's Office of International Programs, will present the award on behalf of the university. The university also will make presentations to the Dalai Lama and to Muhammad Ali, who will participate in the dedication.

The Office of International Programs is coordinating and serving as a co-sponsor of the afternoon program, beginning at 2 p.m., which will include a youth panel. Four Bloomington-area students ranging in age from 14 to 17 have been selected to participate in a panel discussion based on their essay, poetry or art contributions on the topic of "Let Peace Begin with Me." The students will participate one-on-one with panelists to discuss their work. Among the panelists will be Muhammad Ali, Elaine Irwin-Mellencamp and Jetsun Pema, president of the Tibetan Children's Villages and the Dalai Lama's sister.

In addition, the Chamber Choir of the Indiana University Children's Choir will perform.
