Finalists for top research post visit IU this week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Two finalists for the vice president for research position at Indiana University will visit IU Bloomington and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis this week. Finalists will meet with faculty and staff, as well as representatives from IU's regional campuses.

The schedule for the third finalist is pending due to scheduling constraints. Following the visits, the university search committee that identified the finalists will meet again and make further recommendations to IU President Michael McRobbie.

The finalists and their campus visit dates are:

  • Michael Pazzani, vice president for research and graduate and professional education at Rutgers University: Dec. 1-2
  • Jorge José, vice president for research at the University of Buffalo: Dec. 4-5

Distinguished Professor Michael J. Wade, associate vice provost for faculty and academic affairs, chairs the search committee for IU's new vice president for research. The 16-member committee includes IU Bloomington and IUPUI faculty as well as a regional faculty representative from IU South Bend.

"The search committee has worked long and hard to narrow a strong pool of potential candidates," Wade said. "We have invited these excellent candidates to visit and meet with a wide spectrum of faculty and staff. The committee looks forward to the visits and to receiving comments from our colleagues on the candidates."

Pazzani has been at Rutgers University since 2005. In addition to his position as a vice president, he is a professor of computer science. Prior to his work at Rutgers, he was a division director at the National Science Foundation from 2002-2005. He was also chair of the Information and Computer Science Department at University of California, Irvine.

Jorge V. José

Jorge V. José

José has served as vice president for research since 2005 at the University of Buffalo, which is part of the State University of New York system. He is a professor of physics and also has an appointment in the physiology and biophysics department. Prior to his position at Buffalo, he was a distinguished professor and chair of the physics department at Northeastern University.

Currently, Bobby Schnabel, dean of the School of Informatics and Computing, is serving as interim vice president for research. The Office of Research Administration as well as the vice provost for research at IU Bloomington and vice chancellor for research at IUPUI report to the vice president for research.
