IU Southeast to host International Workshop on Diversity Leadership in the Academy on Friday

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 30, 2010

NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- Indiana University Southeast on Friday (April 2) will host representatives from all of IU's campuses at the International Workshop on Diversity Leadership in the Academy.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the IU Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs, the IU Office of the Vice President for International Affairs and the IU Southeast Academy for Leadership and Diversity.

It is a product of IU President Michael McRobbie's University Diversity Initiative. The IU Southeast Academy for Leadership and Diversity, which was one of the award recipients, focused its proposal on the dimension of institutional leadership and commitment. Much of the planning for the workshop is being orchestrated by Sheying Chen, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at IU Southeast.

"This workshop aims to bring together academic administrators, scholars, students and staff from all Indiana University campuses who are interested in the best practices of curricular and co-curricular transformation through diversity and internationalization," Chen explained.

"It also offers an opportunity to meet with others in local institutions and communities committed to achieving excellence through partnership," he said. "Participants will develop a professional network supported through the efforts of the academy and will leave the workshop with activities to be implemented in their classrooms and projects."

The workshop is expected to contribute to national and international conversations on diversity and serve as a business meeting in preparation for a large international conference on diversity leadership planned for the year of 2011.

The program will begin with a welcome from IU Southeast Vice Chancellor Gilbert W. Atnip at 9 a.m. at the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center, 4901 Grand Line Road, on the IU Southeast campus. Panel discussions will take place in the adjacent Knobview Hall.

A ceremony to recognize the academy's first fellows and a luncheon speech by Edwin Marshall, IU vice president for diversity, equity and multicultural Affairs, will begin at noon at the Ogle Center. His topic will be "The Intersection of Diversity, Multiculturalism and Internationalization in the Academy of Today and Tomorrow."

Eight panel discussions held concurrently will address topics such as "Diversifying the Curriculum," "Teaching and Mentoring International and American Minority Students," "Developing Faculty Leadership for an Inclusive Campus," "Community Partnership on Planning for the Indiana African American Trail" and "Study and Teaching Abroad."

Online registration is open at the IU Southeast Noncredit Program Web site. The registration fee is $30 for faculty, staff and administrators and $15 for students.
