Bulen Symposium to feature former Rep. Hamilton, author/analyst Sanchez
Former U.S. Representative Lee Hamilton and groundbreaking Hispanic author and political analyst Leslie Sanchez will headline the Ninth Bulen Symposium on American Politics this month at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Hamilton and Sanchez join a program of academics, media and political party representatives to examine how midterm election results will impact state and national politics, including the 2012 race for the White House.
The symposium will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 18 (Friday) in Room 450 of the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd. It is presented by the Department of Political Science in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.

The midterm election results pose these questions: How significant is the loss of the House to the President's agenda? How successful will Republicans be in pursuing their own agenda? Who will voters reward or punish for the successes or failures of the next two years?
Among those who will assess the impact of the November midterm elections and examine the state of the American political system and its two historic parties going forward are:
- Lee H. Hamilton, director, Center on Congress, IU Bloomington; Former U.S. representative; vice chair, 9/11 Commission; former president, Woodrow Wilson International Center, will present the morning keynote address.
- Leslie Sanchez is an author, political analyst and former director of a White House education initiative. Sanchez was an on-camera member of CNN's award-winning 2008 election coverage team, making her one of only two Hispanic Americans ever hired as political contributors at major news networks, and the first at CNN. She will present the afternoon keynote address.
- Daniel Parker, state chair, Indiana Democratic Party and J. Murray Clark, former state chair, Indiana Republican Party, will discuss the state of the parties.
- John Sides, assistant professor of political science, George Washington University, will explain 2010 and predict 2012.
- Sean Theriault, associate professor of government, University of Texas at Austin, will discuss "the Gingrich Senators, the 112th Congress and the 2012 Elections."
- A panel of Indianapolis political reporters -- Mary Beth Schneider, Indianapolis Star; Kevin Rader, WTHR, Channel 13; and Eric Berman, WIBC and Network Indiana -- will discuss their perspectives on state and local elections
The symposium is named for L. Keith Bulen who personified political leadership in Indiana and beyond for three decades. He served twice in elective office, and served three presidents in major appointive posts, but Bulen is best remembered for his innovative management of major political campaigns, his leadership in revitalizing the Indiana Republican Party, and his unwavering commitment to the American two-party framework.
