IU India Studies announces its spring lecture series

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 9, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- This spring's India Studies lecture series at Indiana University will again bring leading political and cultural scholars of India and South Asia to the IU Bloomington campus.

The lecture series, which is free and open to the public, will begin on Friday (Feb. 11) with a presentation by Kelly D. Alley, director of anthropology at Auburn University.

Alley, who also is Alumni Professor at Auburn, will speak on the topic "Climate Change and Hydropower in the Indian Himalayas," beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the India Studies House, 825 E. Eighth St.

The Himalayan region looms large in climate change discussions. Its unique geographic and hydrologic placement at the water towers of Asia set it apart from other regions rich in resources and population. Its waters and the energy generated from them meet the needs of millions in South and Southeast Asia.

"As hydropower development extends across India, China, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan, the accounting of dams generates some degree of uncertainty about the specific status and cumulative impact of dams in different stages of construction," Alley said. "When the status is cloudy, it is difficult to measure the effects for hydrology, ecology and society -- in short, for climate change."

Other events in the series will include:

  • "U.S. Policy and Strategy in Afghanistan -- What Next?" being presented by Larry P. Goodson, professor of Middle East Studies at the U.S. Army War College, at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 at India Studies House, 825 E. Eighth St.
  • "Coalition Politics in India: Theory and Comparison," presented by Eswaran Sridharan, academic director of the University of Pennsylvania Institute for the Advanced Study of India," at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 28 at India Studies House.
  • "Crisis in Civilization: 70 Years On," by Ananda Lal, professor of English, Jadavpur University in Calcutta, India, at 6:30 p.m. on March 30 in the State Room East of the Indiana Memorial Union, 900 E. Seventh St.
  • "Unarmed Pathans: History or Future?" by Mukulika Banerjee, reader in social anthropology at the London School of Economics, at 5:30 p.m. on April 1 at India Studies House.
  • "Has Pakistan's Democracy Progressed?" by Akbar Zaidi, visiting professor of international and public affairs and of Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies at Columbia University, at 5:30 p.m. on April 15 at India Studies House.
