Indiana University endowment among top 20 publics in nation

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University ranks 16th in the nation among public universities in the market value of its endowment, according to the National Association of College and University Business Officers-Commonfund Study of Endowments released today, Jan. 31. Eight hundred and twenty-three U.S. colleges and universities participated in this year's survey.
As of June 30, 2011, IU's endowment totaled $1.57 billion. The market value of the endowment grew by 14.9 percent in the 2011 fiscal year, said Gene Tempel, president of the Indiana University Foundation, which manages the endowment. Endowment growth is affected not only by return on investments but also by gifts added to the endowment and distributions made from the endowment during the fiscal year.
"The generosity of our alumni and friends plays an increasingly large role in the success of Indiana University," IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. "Maintaining a large and growing endowment is vitally important to the university's ability to provide financial support to deserving students and our work to provide a world-class education at a reasonable cost to all students, as well as recruiting and retaining the best faculty."
"Our ranking reflects both our impressive investment results and the generosity of our devoted donors and alumni," Tempel said. "We credit the investment committee of our board of directors and our investment staff with our 24.1 percent investment return in fiscal 2011. Their prudent management has provided for the steady growth of the endowment, and consequently the increased support for the university."
