New IU Communications blogs highlight discoveries, creativity of the university community

May 9, 2012

BLOOMINGTON -- Indiana University Communications has launched a blog initiative designed to help the media and general public keep abreast of activities, breakthroughs and the range of educational, cultural, scientific and research developments that occur at a vibrant Big Ten university.

At one website, Viewpoints, readers can find blogs such as "Art at IU," "Science at Work," "Health & Vitality," "Policy Briefings" and "IU Inc.," with themes that mirror the "beats" of the bloggers -- IU Communications news and media specialists whose day-to-day responsibilities involve getting the word out about the great work occurring at IU.

Mark Land, associate vice president for IU Communications, also will write about issues, events, initiatives and milestones for the university in his blog, "IU Matters." Ryan Piurek, director of IU Communications, will take readers on a virtual tour of campus life in his blog "Btown Banter."

"We are extremely excited to introduce this new blog site, which will enable our news and media team in Bloomington to share story ideas from IU with journalists in a timely, engaging and informal manner and serve as a terrific information source for people who care about IU," Land said.

Inaugural blog posts discuss such topics as an installation art project involving 22 colorful, 5-foot-tall fiberglass brains, an eminent author's gritty memoir about her struggles with ovarian cancer, the politics of climate science, and the "awesome energy" students bring to campus and their host community.

"It's our hope that these blogs will help IU alumni and our many friends around the world cut through the clutter of 21st-century communications and stay connected with all of the major news and events taking place across the university," Land said.

Bloggers also link to other blog sites of interest, such as the Art From All Angles: IU Art Museum, Herron School of Art and Design, IDS Hoosier Hype and Kinsey Confidential. Viewpoints also includes links to IU's official social media channels, including YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

The blogs and Viewpoints website were developed by the news and media and creative teams at IU Communications.
