IU Health Center receives highest marks

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Health Center (IUHC) has once again been granted top accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). The facility recently achieved a three-year re-accreditation term, the maximum level offered, for the sixth time running.
The accreditation process is not mandatory, but according to Hugh Jessop, executive director of the IU Health Center, the facility opts to take part to ensure that it meets the highest standards of medical and mental health care.
"The accreditation allows people who are unaware of the high quality of care offered at the IU Health Center a benchmark that is nationally recognized," said Jessop.
The accreditation process is long and rigorous, involving 588 nationally recognized standards for the provision of quality health care and services. A team of two surveyors spent two days measuring the IUHC against these standards last June. Their report was then reviewed by a committee, whose recommendation was decided upon by the accrediting board.
"One of our top priorities at Indiana University is to provide high-quality health care to our students," said IU President Michael McRobbie. "The IU Health Center has a long history of doing so on our Bloomington campus. This accreditation by the AAAHC demonstrates that the IU Health Center can stand up to a specialized health care review and receive their highest award."
The IU Health Center's excellent student health care has not gone unnoticed by parents.
"I've been very pleased and impressed with the care our daughter received from the very professional staff at the IU Health Center," wrote an IU student's mother, who also happens be be a registered nurse, in a recent letter to McRobbie. "As a parent, I have complete confidence and peace of mind knowing that my child will receive the best medical care when it is needed. But more importantly, my child appreciated the kindness and care she received when she was feeling miserable."
According to Jessop, it is the IU Health Center's array of highly trained and skilled medical and mental health care providers specializing in the care of a university age population who are responsible for the remarks of high praise and the full accreditation.
"The staff provides this high quality care every day that students walk in the door," said Jessop. "Their commitment to high quality care coupled with a strong desire to assist students in being successful at IU is the driving force in their day-to-day interactions with patients."
