IU professor receives public administration career award

FOR IMMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 24, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) has honored Indiana University professor James L. Perry with an award that is the public administration field's counterpart to journalism's Pulitzer Prize.

A Chancellor's Professor of Public and Environmental Affairs at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA), Perry received the Dwight Waldo Award in Dallas last week. The award is presented to persons who have made outstanding contributions to the professional literature of public administration over an extended career. Waldo is considered the father of modern public administration.

After nearly 35 years as a scholar, Perry is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in public administration, the study of how public organizations are managed.

"It's extremely fitting that Jim receive this honor," said SPEA Interim Dean Kurt Zorn "Like Dwight Waldo, Jim is widely respected for his work. As an author, consultant and scholar, Jim has made important contributions to the public administration field, his research is widely read, and he has mentored numerous Ph.D. students."

Perry's research focuses on public service motivation, community and national service, and government reform. His research has appeared in such journals as Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, and Public Administration Review. He is author and editor of several books, including Quick Hits for Educating Citizens (Indiana University Press, 2006) and Motivation in Public Management: the Call of Public Service (Oxford University Press), which is due to appear in April 2008.

The Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs is a global leader in public policy and management, environmental science, and in managing the relationship between the two. The school is committed to teaching, research and service in public and non-profit management, public policy, environmental science, arts administration and health administration. SPEA has earned national distinction for innovative educational programs and is ranked third among graduate programs in public affairs according to U.S. News and World Report.
