The Perry Encounter

WHAT: In 1853, on behalf of President Fillmore, Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry of the U.S. Navy steamed into Uraga harbor near modern-day Tokyo, demanding that Japan open its ports to Western traders. Visit a special installation of 11 prints illustrating this historic event.

She-Devils and Heroines: The Power of Women in Netherlandish Prints

The Spoils of War: Art in Nazi Germany

WHAT: This exhibition showcases Iranian posters of the Islamic Revolution (1979) and the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88). During this time, posters served as visual mechanisms through which a young and unsteady nation struggled to define and defend itself.

Lunch With an IPFW Scientist

WHAT: Parents, Lunch With an IPFW Scientist is a great way to get your kids off the couch and away from computer or video games.
Dec. 10: Jordan Marshall, assistant professor of biology, "Where Do Bugs Go in Winter?" Marshall will describe the different ways insects deal with cold temperatures. Students can then look for over-wintering insects in samples of seeds, fruits, sticks, logs and soil.
COST: $16 for nonmembers and $10 for members of Science Central. Lunch is included in the price of admission.

IU Northwest to host Off-Broadway hit 'Our Young Black Men Are Dying'

WHAT: The historic and relevant performance will serve as a catalyst for meaningful dialogue and positive action, long after the hourlong performance concludes. The call for love and healing is powerful and will begin immediately following with a discussion led by the performers.

WHAT: Waveforms is an exhibit of sound art featuring the work of six artists and two artist teams. It is an interdisciplinary art work showcasing sound as the principle component. This exhibition explores, through an examination of creative and artistic practices, the interface of sound and new media technologies. Featured artists include Carrie Bodle, Jacob C. Hammes, Norbert Herber/Rowland Ricketts, Tesia Kosmalski, Lou Mallozzi, Shannon McMullen/Fabian Winkler, Stephanie Rowden and Jesse Seay.

Concert: Embraced by the Second Viennese School: Act ll

WHAT: Following on the success of last year's concert, Jacobs School of Music faculty violinist Jorja Fleezanis and violist Stephen Wyrczynski continue their exploration of the Second Viennese School with Alban Berg's Quartet Op. 3 (1910) and Arnold Schoenberg's Quartet No. 2 (1908) along with student artists Sarah Saviet, Benjamin Hoffman, Daniel Lelchuk and Sharon Harms.

WHAT: Len Prince is a New York-based photographer who has produced a range of work in a career that spans more than four decades. He excels at portraiture and is especially known for his work with celebrities such as Debbie Harry, Eddie Izzard and Drew Barrymore. His striking photographs of the nude figure display his skill with composition and lighting.

WHAT: "Reckless," by Craig Lucas, takes place on the eve of Christmas,1983. Rachel, mother of two, is deliriously happy. That is, until she discovers that her husband has taken a contract out on her life. What follows is the absurdly dark, insanely funny story of Rachel's reckless ride through guilt, game shows and the gutter in search of serenity and redemption.
