"Stretch" givers are forgoing vacation homes, early retirement and college saving plans. An increasing number of stretch givers are donating out of proportion to their wealth. Stretch donors often are influenced by the giving and spending patterns they witnessed when younger, says Patrick Rooney, director of research at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.
