BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana University Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Alumni Association will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a performance by nationally renowned comedian Kate Clinton on Sept. 8 at the IU Auditorium.
Clinton describes herself as a "faith-based, tax-paying, America-loving political humorist and family entertainer" who "still believes that humor gets us through peacetime, wartime and scoundrel time." In 2006, she celebrated her 25th anniversary of performing with a 50-city "It's Come To This!" tour. This year she brings her new show, "Climate Change," around the world.
At the 2007 GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards, Clinton was presented with the Pioneer Award. In 1999, she received a lifetime achievement award from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
"Kate Clinton has held the mirror that reflects every single issue that has faced us for the last 25 years. We've laughed with her; we've cried with her and we've been changed by her," said Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

Clinton's IU show will cap off an evening of events celebrating the GLBTAA's anniversary. The festivities will begin with a reception and silent auction at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, 275 N. Jordan Ave., at 5 p.m. The GLBTAA will introduce its new board members during the reception. The reception will be followed by a buffet dinner at 6 p.m. and Clinton's show at 8 p.m. All proceeds from the auction, dinner and Clinton's performance will benefit the GLBTAA and its philanthropic activities, including student scholarships.
"As an affiliate group of the IU Alumni Association, the GLBTAA certainly works to connect people back to IU," said Erica De Santis, outgoing president of the GLBTAA. "But our mission is actually much broader than that. We are dedicated to improving the lives of GLBT students, faculty, staff and alumni of all IU campuses. We do this by creating community, supporting those in need and advocating for additional protections for our most vulnerable populations."
The IU Alumni Association is dedicated to serving the university and its diverse alumni, students and friends. As one of the nation's largest alumni organizations, serving more than 500,000 graduates worldwide, the IUAA provides many programs and services to its members, non-member alumni and the university.
