BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie welcomes three new members named Thursday (Aug. 2) to the IU Board of Trustees and a fourth trustee reappointed by Gov. Mitch Daniels. Their terms begin immediately.

Stephen L. Ferguson, who was appointed to the board in 1998 by the late Gov. Frank O'Bannon and has served as president since 2005, has been reappointed and is expected to continue in that capacity.

Also appointed by Daniels to three-year terms on the board are Jack M. Gill, a 35-year veteran of Silicon Valley and a founder and managing member of Vanguard Ventures, a venture capital firm specializing in high technology start-ups, and Derica W. Rice, senior vice president and chief financial officer of Eli Lilly and Co.

Arthur D. King, a junior majoring in accounting and finance in IU's Kelley School of Business, was appointed as student trustee and will serve a two-year term.

"They bring a great deal of experience and talent to the board, and there is no doubt they will all be great contributors," McRobbie said. "On a personal note, I particularly appreciate that the governor worked very hard to find and select new trustees whose significant accomplishments in both academia and the professional worlds ensure that they will be able to help us achieve our ambitious objectives."

Stephen L. Ferguson

Ferguson, of Bloomington, is chairman of the board of Cook Group Inc., the parent company of companies worldwide involved in the research, development, manufacture and sale of medical devices. He earned a law degree from the IU School of Law-Bloomington in 1966, after earning an undergraduate degree from Wabash College.

He also serves on the board of directors of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and is of counsel with the law firm Ferguson & Ferguson in Bloomington. He is also a former member of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the Indiana General Assembly.

Since 1999, he has been a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School, where he is a research scientist and lecturer and senior advisor to the director of the Center for Innovative Minimally Invasive Therapy. He and his wife, Linda, founded The Gill Foundation of Texas 10 years ago to focus on education and philanthropy and have provided gifts totaling more than $25 million to high schools, colleges and universities.

Gill's ties to IU include serving as a member of the deans' advisory boards of the Kelley School and the College of Arts and Sciences and as a director of the IU Foundation. He was named a 1999 winner of the Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans. He also holds a chemistry and engineering degree from Lamar University.
