Media advisory: IU Bloomington readies for Move-In Day

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington residence halls will officially open at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, for Move-In Day.
More than 11,000 beds are available for the 2012-13 academic year, and officials in IU Residential Programs and Services expect to be operating at full capacity.
Move-In Day marks the beginning of IU Bloomington's annual Welcome Week. During the morning, IU President Michael A. McRobbie and IU first lady Laurie Burns McRobbie, along with IU Executive Vice President and IU Bloomington Provost Lauren Robel, and Dean of Students Harold "Pete" Goldsmith, will tour the halls of residence and extend a welcome to new students and their parents. This will be Robel's first Move-In Day since assuming the role of provost at IU Bloomington on July 1.
On Wednesday afternoon, McRobbie and Robel will preside over official freshman induction ceremonies, at 2 and 4 p.m. at IU Auditorium. During the ceremonies, which last about 45 minutes each, entering students and their families will learn to sing the IU Alma Mater, get acquainted with IU ceremonial traditions and receive a personal welcome from university officials and other distinguished guests. After the ceremony, there will be a picnic on the grounds of nearby Woodburn Hall.
During the morning move-in activities, Associate Vice President for IU Communications Mark Land (812-322-9016, email@example.com) and Director of News and Media Ryan Piurek (812-340-1018, firstname.lastname@example.org) will be on site to coordinate media requests and identify the locations of the touring IU officials as they stop at various residence halls. Piurek can also connect media with several new students who have agreed to be interviewed in advance of Wednesday's events.
Final phase at Briscoe
This year's Move-In Day is marked by the reopening of the Briscoe Gucker Tower, the final phase of a $42 million renovation project at Briscoe Residence Center, 1225 N. Fee Lane. In its new configuration, Gucker Tower will be home to 348 students in a variety of suite-style living arrangements.
Briscoe Gucker features four-person suites with shared living rooms and baths, two- and three-person suites with shared baths and two-person and single rooms with private baths. In fall 2013, it will be home to the new Civic Leaders Living Learning Center, a partnership between RPS and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
All rooms are fully furnished and include air conditioning, fire protection, card-access security, cable TV service, wireless Internet service, utilities and insulated windows. Each floor will have a room equipped with eco-friendly washers and dryers. Rooms in Briscoe will be available for media to photograph.
The three buildings that combine to form Briscoe Residence Center are the home of two living learning centers in addition to a Hutton Honors College Residential Community. Other features include a fitness area and dance studio, classrooms, an academic support center, academic advisor offices, an RPS Libraries/Movies/Music and More service center, a student government office and a computer center.
Those traveling to campus for Move-In Day events should be aware of ongoing construction at the 45/46 Bypass and expect traffic delays. Campus construction projects will also affect Move-In Day traffic. Fee Lane is open for southbound traffic only between Law Lane and Tenth Street. Multiple construction projects in the southeast part of campus have created the need for alternative traffic patterns for students moving into Read, Forest, Willkie and the new 3rd and Union residential facility.
